I – Ching (易经)
I-Ching (易经) also pronounced, as ‘e-ching’ is one of the classical collection in the book of Zhuo Yi (周易). I-Ching is a divination manual, a book dedicate to change and using symbols to express the flow of energy in the universe. This literature has been regarded as the first among the six classics. And with no surprise that this escapes the great burning of the books under the ruling of Emperor Qin.
I-Ching is an extraordinary book filled with abundance of the beauty and wisdom. No wonders the Chinese philosophy, Confucianism and Taoism have their common roots here.
Base on the concept of qi or the universal energy it has had developed and applied to the natural science of the Chinese Geomancy and Astrology.
Fu Xi, the great Chinese sage to whom the I_Ching system is attributed, constructed his findings of all suitabtion and condition in the form of 64 kua consisting of 6 linear lines stacked above one another, either a yang line ( —- ) or a yin line ( — — ) called yao in Chinese.
The top three lines and the bottom three lines of each of the kua are called trigrams. There are 8 trigams namely kan, kun, zhen, xun, qian, dui, gen and li.
Following the law of eternal change, the lines are always in motion, always moving upwards. The movement is always in time to the pace of the universe, reflecting the universe itself. As a whole, the kua and its lines (yao) represent every possible condition in heaven and earth with all its states of change.
Each of the 64 kua can change to one another through the movement of one or more of the lines that form the kua. There are 4096 possible combination, which is said to represent every possible condition in the heaven and on earth.
Each of the kua, with a combination of 384 lines in total, represents a situation and condition. Each situation and condition contains 6 stages of its own. They are: about to change into, beginning, expanding, approaching its maximum, peak and passing the peak and turning towards.
Thus, each kua does not only conceive of a suitation or a possbile condition, it also includes all the states of change.
