Feng Shui - The Secret Key to Unlocking Life's Hidden Treasures and Riches

The Hungry Ghost Festival

The 7th Lunar Month, also known as the Hungry Ghost Month, marks a sacred period in the traditional calendar. It is a time when the Yin energy grows strong, and the gates of the underworld are said to open, allowing wandering spirits to roam among the living.

Families and businesses observe this time with deep respect, holding rituals and offering food to appease and honour both ancestors and the unseen souls without descendants. Private banquets are arranged not just for the living, but also to show generosity to the spirits who seek warmth and nourishment.

🌸 Common Beliefs and Taboos to Observe -
To maintain harmony and avoid spiritual disturbance, certain practices are passed down from elders:

  • Do not respond when your name is called at night - what answers may not be what you expect.
  • Avoid patting shoulders; we carry three spirit flames - one on the head and two on the shoulders - never let them be dimmed.
  • Keep chopsticks flat - never upright in rice bowls, lest the spirits mistake it as an offering.
  • Refrain from whistling at night; it may draw wandering souls.
  • When near cemeteries, bow inwardly and whisper, “Please excuse me for passing.”
  • Stay away from rivers and seas - water spirits are known to seek company.
  • Never take what is not yours from offering tables. Competing with the spirits brings misfortune.
  • Avoid wind chimes near the bed - they invite Yin qi during the quietest hours.
  • Do not engage in spirit-calling games like Die Xian - some doors are best left unopened.
  • Steer clear of forests or desolate places at night, especially for those with sensitive energy.
  • Do not pick up coins or red packets from the ground - they may be spirit offerings.
  • Speak no ill while passing funeral sites.
  • Do not step on incense or offerings - walk with respect.
  • Refrain from leaning against walls - spirits often rest there.
  • Bring laundry in before nightfall - clothing can attract unseen guests.
  • Avoid taking random photos after dark - what appears in them may not be for your eyes.
  • Never shine flashlights at trees; some spirits seek shelter among their branches.

🌕 Zhong Yuan Festival – Peak of the Month
On the 15th day of the 7th month, known as Zhong Yuan, offerings are laid out in odd numbers - symbolic of auspicious energy. A traditional display may include one roasted piglet, three chickens, five eggs, seasonal fruits, sweets, and tea. After prayers, wine or tea is poured over rice in a circle to bless the surroundings, while joss paper is burned to send wealth to the spirit realm.

🙏 Those who seek blessings for health, fortune, or protection often make a silent vow. If wishes come true, it is vital to repay the promise the following year - with gratitude and greater offerings.
