First 8 Lunar Days
Since ancient times, our ancestors watched the flow of the lunar days with reverence, believing that each day carried its own Qi, its own meaning, and its own subtle blessing for the year ahead. Among these treasured teachings, the naming of the first eight lunar days stands as a reminder of how closely humans once lived with Heaven, Earth, and all living creatures.
In the records of the Jin Dynasty, the first eight days of the Lunar New Year were each aligned with an animal or with the grains that sustain life. Every day was thought to hold the spirit of its guardian being, shaping the energy of that day.
The 1st lunar day belongs to the Chicken.
The 2nd lunar day belongs to the Dog.
The 3rd lunar day belongs to the Pig.
The 4th lunar day belongs to the Sheep.
The 5th lunar day belongs to the Ox.
The 6th lunar day belongs to the Horse.
The 7th lunar day is the Day of Humanity.
The 8th lunar day honors the Grains that nourish all life.
古语云:
「一日为鸡日,二日为犬,三日为猪,四日为羊,五日为牛,六日为马,七日为人,八日为谷。」
Following this belief, each animal’s day was regarded as its “birthday,” while the 7th day became known as 人日, the day humanity was formed and blessed. In respect of this cycle, the old tradition encouraged people to refrain from eating the animal linked to that day, allowing its spirit to be honored and the year’s luck to remain pure.
May this ancient wisdom guide your home with steadiness and warmth.
