Each Year Holds a Gua

In the ever-turning cycle of Heaven and Earth, the qi of each year is not the same. Just as the stars shift and the seasons change, every year carries its own pattern and rhythm. In Chinese metaphysics, this yearly pattern is revealed through a hexagram (Gua) from the I Ching, also known as the Book of Changes.

The Gua acts as a cosmic compass — showing the prevailing energy of the year, its opportunities, its challenges, and the best way to move in harmony with the times.

The Origin of the Gua
The Gua comes from the I Ching (易经), one of the oldest classics of Chinese wisdom, dating back over 3,000 years. The I Ching is built upon 64 hexagrams, each made up of six lines (either solid or broken). These lines represent Yin and Yang, the two fundamental forces of the universe.

Together, the 64 hexagrams form a complete cycle of all possible transformations — the rise and fall, the opening and closing, the coming together and the breaking apart of energies.

When applied to the cycle of years, each year is aligned with one of these hexagrams. This yearly Gua becomes a reflection of Heaven and Earth’s qi for that time.
