Double Spring
Li Chun立春 is a term in the Chinese solar calendar. Li Chun, also known as Da Chun is the first term of the 24 solar terms. Li Chun occurs when the Sun is exactly at the celestial longitude of 315°. The transition point marks the beginning of the season of spring and the commencement of the Chinese year in the Tradition Chinese calendar known as the Hsia calendar 夏历. It's also the beginning of a sexagenary cycle, the change of zodiac sign for the year.
Li Chun is not the day where Chinese celebrates our New Year. The Chinese celebrates our New Year based on the Lunar calendar. The 1st day the Lunar calendar is known as 大年初一 (Da Nian Chu Yi).
Li Chun 立春 normally falls on the 3rd or 4th of February of the Gregorian calendar, the calendar commonly use today. In the Year of Rabbit 2023, there are two Li Chun, due to the Leap Lunar 2nd month. Hence, the Year of Rabbit is known as the Double Spring year 双春年. The 1st occurrence of Li Chun for the Year of Rabbit is on 4 February 2023 at 10:33 Hour and the 2nd occurance is 4 February 2024, 16:27 Hour. With these factors, the almanac predicts a long and cold winter and severe drought in autumn.
Lighting up your home or work place on Li Chun day ushers new energy and boost luck.
Consuming these 5 items (red dates, carrots, honey, onion and ginger) on the day of Li Chun is said to be able to improve one’s immune system for the year.
