Feng Shui - The Secret Key to Unlocking Life's Hidden Treasures and Riches

The Majestic Lion Dance

The Lion Dance (舞狮), an ancient and revered tradition, holds a special place in Chinese celebrations. For centuries, it has graced festivals, housewarmings, business openings, and even the final day of funeral wakes — always symbolizing the ushering in of good fortune, honor, and prosperity.

Unlike the real animal, the Chinese Lion embodies protection, authority, wisdom, and luck. Stone lions standing guard at temples, homes, and buildings serve as constant reminders of this powerful symbolism — to ward off negativity and invite auspicious energy.

Accompanied by the thunderous beat of drums, gongs, and cymbals, each movement of the Lion mirrors the rhythm of the music — alive, joyful, and full of spirit. The loud, rhythmic sounds are said to scare away evil forces and attract positive Qi into the space.

Often, you’ll see playful “Buddha” mascots (大头佛) joining in, teasing and guiding the lion — adding laughter and liveliness to the scene.

The highlight of the performance, known as “Choi Cheng” (采青) or Picking the Green, features lettuce and red packets hung high above the doorway. The lion leaps, climbs, and “chews” the greens before spitting them out — a symbolic act of spreading wealth and good luck to all.

During Lunar New Year, the lion’s display becomes even more meaningful. Mandarins, chilli pairs, sugar cane, and other symbolic fruits are incorporated, each arrangement carrying auspicious wishes — for sweetness, strength, and success in the year ahead.

Each Lion Dance performance is chosen with care, aligning with auspicious dates to maximize blessings and positive energy.
